Elements of Descriptive Writing  Students will learn to revise the aspect of delivering the following:

  Enable a sophisticated use of structure

 For students to detect and utilise these tenses accurately. Common grammatical errors will also be reviewed as well as how these tenses can aid in their misuse 

Book Reports  

(Due Week 8 or 9) 

  Independent study of a novel (250 + pages) and a written/oral presentation to be executed  (Oral/written assignment will rotate with half the class and then alternate the following term)    Students are encouraged to select a genre that interests them and to be able to critically express their reading experience by reviewing the literary features based on a provided reading grid.

Second Book Report Due 

(First 10 days of January 2021) 

 Second Book Report to be presented either orally or in a written response (half class rotation carried forward from previous term)  •  Students are encouraged to be selective as they have to present a more developed critical awareness than the first book report 

• Reading at this point in the academic year is even more enhanced as key literary features that have been taught in the other units (article/ comprehension) can be identified and utilised to elicit understanding and connections 

(A) Poetry  

      (6-7 weeks) 

  Analysis of poetic features found in a range of poems spanning from various contexts and styles 

 Students to cover a total of 5 poems: 

  • Shakespeare’s, “ Sonnet 18” 
  • Shakespeare’s, “ Sonnet 130” 
  • Soyinka’s, “Telephone Conversation” 
  • Angelou’s, “ I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” 
  • Poe’s, “Annabel Lee” 
  to illuminate and help students appreciate the ways in which writers use language to shape meanings 

 to enable a comprehensive and literary understanding of the poems 

 to identify contextual features and briefly delve into the societal and historical concerns of the time 

to identify key themes by finding poetic devices to support ideas 

(B)  Writing  

      (2-3 weeks) 

⁎ Discursive Writing  Students will learn how to: 

•  structure a discursive essay 

  the importance of assembling the information effectively 

  effectively link ideas in the essay 

  write in the appropriate tone 

  to  present well supported ideas with details and explanations

Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah 

Students will: 

  understand the setting and context of the novel 

•  review the current continuous plight that the refugees face today in Europe

  understand form, audience and purpose 

  develop skills for comparing and contrasting texts 

  review the literary skills used by the author 

  study character development 

 

    Students will be assigned: 

 a thematic essay 

  a group PowerPoint presentation 

  Critical debate on issues from the novel where the students will incorporate argumentative and discursive techniques covered in Term 2
