Term 1

Introduction to the IGCSE exam and revision of writer’s techniques 

 

 

 

Students will be introduced to the requirements of the exam.  

Students will revise the writer’s techniques learnt in previous years. 

 

 

3 weeks 

 

 

 

 

Revision of narrative writing 

 

Revise plot triangle, description of character, setting, atmosphere 

Students will understand how to follow their imagination in a way that will allow them to create a piece of writing for a reader to enjoy.  

 

 

 

 

 

4-5 weeks  

 

 

  

Introduction of Section A of the exam. Long answer questions 3 and 6.  

 

Understand some of the features of fiction and non- fiction texts and prepare students to answer exam questions on themincluding analysis of language and structure. 

 

3 weeks  Revision of descriptive writing  Students will learn how to use their senses, vivid imagery, imaginative choice of words and a variety of specific techniques to create effective descriptions. 

 


 

Term 2

4 weeks  Section A comparison long answer question (question 7)   Students will learn how to compare some of the features of various texts including language, purpose,  structure,  etc.  Students  will then practice answering detailed comparison questions.

Section B- formal and informal letters  

 

 

Students will learn how to write letters for a specific audience and purpose. 

1 week   Introduction to directed writing   

Students will be guided through the process of selecting, interpreting and using information for a piece of directed writing.  

 

 

 

2-3 weeks 

 

 

Newspaper articles 

 

Students will learn how to write a newspaper article for a specific audience and purpose. They will learn to communicate effectively and imaginatively, adapting form, tone and register of writing.  


 

Term 3

1-2 weeks  Magazine articles  Students will learn how to write a magazine article for a specific audience and purpose. They will learn how to communicate effectively and imaginatively, adapting form, tone and register of writing. 
4 weeks   Speeches   Students will learn to write engaging speeches for specific audiences and purposes.  
1 week  Present speeches  Students will present speeches to the class in preparation for the speaking section of the exam.  
2 weeks  Section A practice  Students will improve and practice their analytical skills for the long answer questions in section A of the exam (comprehension)  
2-3 weeks   Revision for final exam  Students will prepare for the final exam.
