Art & Design A Level is a two-year course consisting of two components:

Component One: Personal Investigation (60% of total qualification)

The component is a center-set theme chosen in consultation with students. Students are taught to develop ideas, research primary and contextual sources, record practical and written observations with media and refine ideas towards producing personal outcomes. The Personal Investigation incorporates three major elements: supporting studies in the form of a sketchbook, practical work and a personal study. The personal study is a critical written essay showing contextual research and understanding in a minimum of 1000 words.

Component Two: Externally Set Assignment (40% of total qualification)

The component incorporates preparatory studies in the form of a sketchbook and a 15-hour final outcome produced under exam conditions. The Externally Set Assignment is released to the center on 1st February of year 7 and contains a theme and starting points.

Art & Design A Level requires students to develop skills to:

  • Choose a theme and record observations, undertake research, gather, select and organize visual and other appropriate information
  • Research contemporary and past artists/designers in which students will develop skills in analyzing and evaluating art works. Using this knowledge, the students will extend their thinking and inform their own work
  • Record ideas and observations relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on their work and progress
  • Present a personal response.

Students should provide evidence that fulfills the four Assessment Objectives:

AO1       Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other                                        sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding

AO2       Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing                                    and refining ideas as work develops

AO3       Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress

AO4       Present a personal and meaningful response that realizes intentions and, where appropriate, makes                              connections between visual and other elements.
